When Should You Order Firewood for Winter? Earlier Than You Think.
It’s August. The sun is shining, the BBQ is going, and winter probably isn’t exactly top of mind.
But if you burn firewood through the colder months, now is actually a pretty good time to start thinking about that woodpile.
Because every year, the same thing happens: the temperature drops, fireplaces and wood stoves get fired up, and suddenly everyone remembers they need firewood at the same time.
Don't Wait for the First Cold Snap
There’s something about that first really cold fall morning that makes people collectively think:
We should probably order firewood.
And you absolutely can.
But ordering earlier means your winter wood is already sitting at home, stacked and ready to go before you actually need it.
No scrambling. No watching the weather forecast. No realizing at 8 p.m. that you have three logs left beside the fireplace.
Just a full woodpile waiting for winter.
August and Early Fall Are a Great Time to Stock Up
Getting your winter firewood delivered before the cold weather arrives gives you time to get everything organized properly.
Once your delivery arrives, you can stack your wood off the ground, cover the top from rain and snow, and leave the sides open so air can circulate.
Then when the first cold night arrives?
You're ready.
And let's face it, stacking a load of firewood is considerably more enjoyable in a T-shirt than it is in freezing rain.
How Much Firewood Do You Need?
That depends entirely on how you burn.
Someone lighting the fireplace on Saturday nights obviously won't go through the same amount of wood as a household regularly heating with a wood stove.
If you're an occasional burner, a smaller order may be all you need. If firewood is an important part of heating your home all winter, you'll want to plan for considerably more.
Not sure what makes sense? Ask us. We'd much rather help you figure it out now than have you discover halfway through January that your woodpile is disappearing faster than expected.
Make Sure You're Buying Seasoned Firewood
Durham Firewood supplies seasoned maple and ash hardwood, cut and split into 12- and 16-inch lengths and ready to burn.
Seasoned firewood lights more easily, burns hotter and produces less smoke than wet, unseasoned wood.
If you've ever spent 20 minutes trying to convince a hissing log to catch fire, you'll understand why that matters.
Face Cord or Bush Cord?
If you're new to ordering firewood, the terminology can be confusing.
A face cord is one row of firewood stacked 4 feet high by 8 feet long. With 16-inch logs, a face cord is approximately one-third of a full bush cord. With 12-inch logs, it’s approximately one-quarter of a bush cord.
A bush cord is 128 cubic feet of stacked firewood, traditionally 4 feet high × 4 feet wide × 8 feet long.
How much you need really comes down to how often you burn.
Weekend fireplace? You probably don't need the same woodpile as someone running a wood stove every day in January.
